Syllabus of B.Sc. (Botany)

THREE-YEAR FULL-TIME PROGRAMME (Six-Semester Course) 

Semester wise syllabus of B.sc. Botany of kumaun unviersity

Semester system course structure : 

  • The course work shall be divided into six semesters with three papers in each semester.
  • Each paper in a semester will be of 80 marks out of which 60 marks for theory and 20 marks are allotted for internal assessment (one written test/assignment/both)
  • Each theory paper shall consists of Three Sections : 
  • Section A :  20% of total marks (12 marks; one question of 12 parts; one word answer, fill in the blanks, true- false; all parts will be compulsory).
  • Section B :  40% of total marks (24 marks, one question of 06 parts; any 04 have to be attempted with short answer).
  • Section C :  40% of total marks; (24 marks, 04 questions, any two have to be attempted with long answer).
  • Practical in each semester will be of total 60 marks, out of which 15 marks are assigned for internal assessment (attendance, practical records and herbarium etc.).
  • Practical examination will be evaluated by both external and internal examiner. The duration of theory and practical examination shall be 03 hrs and 04 hrs, respectively.

Paper I.  Cytology, Genetics, Molecular Biology And Plant Breeding

UNIT-I

     1.  Cell  structure  and  division:  cytoplasmic organelles, nucleus, chromosomes,
          mitosis, meiosis, comparison of mitosis and meiosis.

     2.  Laws of  inheritance:  Mendel’s  experiments,  principles of segregation, 
          independent assortment, incomplete dominance, sex chromosomes and sex linked
          inheritance,  gene   interactions,   modified   ratios: complementary,   supplementary,
          duplicate and epistatic factors.

     3.  Linkage and crossing over: complete and incomplete linkage, linkage group and crossing          over.

     4.  Mutations,     Chromosomal       abbrrations-  deficiency,     duplication,   translocation,
          inversion and polyploidy.

     5.  Sex determination in Drosophila, Man and Melandrium.


UNIT-II

     1.  Structure and function of nucleic acids and genetic code: Nucleic acid as genetic
         material, structure of nucleic acids, properties of genetic code. 
     2.  Classical and modern concept of genes.


UNIT-III

     1.  Plant breeding: aims and objectives, basic techniques of Plant breeding.
     2.  Crop   improvement   methods,   Selection   ,   Plant   introduction   and   acclimatization,
          hybridization and mutational breeding etc. and hybrid vigour.



Paper II.  Biotechnology and Economic Botany 

UNIT-I

     1.  Introduction    to  Biotechnology:     role  in  modern    life,  isolation  and  culture  of
          different types of microorganisms.

     2.  Recombinant DNA technology: Tools of genetic engineering, enzymes, plasmids
          and cosmids vectors, brief idea of techniques and scope of genetic engineering.

     3.  Plant tissue culture techniques: Plant cell, tissue and organ cultures, tissue culture
          techniques, collection and storage of germplasm (cryopreservation), application of
          plant    tissue  culture  with   reference   to  somaclonal    variation,   synthetic   seeds,
          embryo   culture   and   embryo   resque,   anther   culture,   meristem   culture,   somatic
          hybridization and somatic seed production.

    4.  Industrial    biotechnology:    Fermentation     Technology    with   reference   to  alcohol
         production.

    5.  Agriculture Biotechnology: Biofertilizers and biological control in fields.

    6.  Nutritional Biotechnology: Mycotoxins and Health hazards, control of mycotoxin
         production, single cell protein.

    7.  Elementary idea of the following:
        (i) Gene Bank             (ii) Nif and Nod Genes          (iii) C-DNA
        (iv) Totipotency          (v) Antibiotics                 (vi)  Mycoprotein


UNIT-II

     A brief knowledge of Botany and commercial utilization/ uses of the following plant
     products:

     1.  Cereals and millets- wheat, rice and maize.
     2.  Food plants: potato, sugarcane.
     3.  Fruits: mango, apple, banana, citrus and litchi.
     4.  Fibres: cotton, jute, hemp and coir.
     5.  Vegetables: root vegetables, stem vegetables and fruit vegetables.
     6.  Timbers: Teak, shisham, sal chir and deodar.
     7.  Medicinal Plants: Aconitum, Atropa, Cinchona, Rauwolfia, Ephedra and Withania.
     8.  Oils: Coconut oil, linseed oil, mustard oil and groundnut oil.
     9.  Beverages: Tea and Coffee.


Paper III. Plant Physiology and Biochemistry


UNIT-I 

    1.  Diffusion, Osmosis, Plasmolysis and Inhibition.
    2.  Absorption of Water.
    3.  Transpiration:      Factors   affecting   the   rate  of   transpiration,   significance    of
         transpiration, mechanism of stomatal opening and closing.
    4.  Wilting and wilting coefficient.
    5.  Mineral     Nutrition,   Macro   and   Micronutrients,    mineral   deficiency    symptoms,
         absorption of minerals.
    6.  Translocation of solutes and factors affecting translocation, mechanism of phloem transport.


UNIT-II

      1.  Respiration:   ATP-  the   biological   energy   currency,   structure   of   mitochondria,
          mechanism   of   aerobic   and   anaerobic   respiration.,   Oxidative   phosphorylation,
          fermentation, RQ and the factors affecting the rate of respiration, Kreb cycle.
      2.  Electron    transport   system   (chemi-osmotic     theory),   redox   potential,  Pentose
          Phosphate Pathway.
      3.  Photosynthesis:       Historical    aspects,   action    spectra   and    enhancement      effect,
           conceps     of  two   photosystems,     Z-scheme,      structure   of  chloroplast,   pigments,
          mechanism of photosynthesis: Light Phase (Exitation of Chlorophyll, Scheme of
          ATP   and   NADPH   formation,   PS   I   and   PS   II):   Dark   Phase-  Path   of   Carbon
           (reductive     pentose   phosphate       cycle   in   C3  plants),    Hill   reaction,    photo-
          phosphorylation, factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis, CAM Plants, photorespiration.


UNIT-III

      1.  Enzymes:   Properties,   classification,   mechanism   of   enzyme   action   and   factors
           affecting enzyme activities.
      2.  Nitrogen fixation and Protein synthesis, importance if Nitrate reductase and its
           regulation, ammonium assimilation and cryptochrome.
      3.  Phytochrome system.
      4.  Growth     and    Developments:  Definition, phase of growth, seed dormancy,
           germination, plant movement, Auxins, Gibberellins, Cytokinin, Abscissic acid
           and ethylene.


UNIT-IV

      1.  Carbohydrates:   Structure   and   function   of   Monosaccharides,   Oligosaccharides
           and Polysaccharides.
      2.  Amino acids and Proteins: an elementary accounts.
      3.  Elementary idea of fats and lipids: Structure and function of lipids, Fatty acids
          biosynthesis, storage and mobilization of fatty acids, β- oxidation.

UNIT –I

    1-  A general account of the origin and evolution of angiosperms.
    2-  Basic principles and broad outline of the classification proposed by Bentham and Hooker
        and Hutchinson.
    3-  International code of Botanical nomenclature.
    4-  Botanical gardens and herbaria.
    5-  Botanical survey of  India.


UNIT-II

Distinguishing features of the following families with special reference to the local flora.

DICOTYLEDONS: 

1-  POLYPETALAE: Ranunculaceae, Brassicaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Malvaceae, Rutaceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Apiaceae.

2-  MONOCHLAMUDEAE:
Euphorbiaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Polygonaceae.



UNIT- III

1- GAMOPETALAE: Rubiaceae, Asteraceae, Solanaceae, Acanthaceae, Verbenaceae, Lamiaceae, Apocynaceae.

2- MONOCOTYLEDONS: Orchidaceae, Liliaceae, Poaceae.

PAPER-II- ANATOMY, EMBRYOLOGY AND MORPHOGENESIS    M.M-33


UNIT-I

   1-  Meristems-Primary and econdary meristems, characteristics and functions.
   2-  A brief account of root, shoot and leaf anatomy.
   3-  Root-stem transition.
   4-  Secondary growth, secondary xylem, secondary phloem-structure-function, growth rings,
       sapwood, heartwood, periderm and anamolous secondary growth in Dicot, Monocot stem
       and roots.


UNIT-II

   1-  Microsporogenesis and male gametophyte.
   2-  Megasporogenesis and female gametophyte.
   3-  Pollination and fertilization, self incompatibility, double fertilization, triple fusion.
   4-  Formation of seed-Endosperm and embroyo.


UNIT-III

   1-  General concept of morphogenesis.
   2-  Seed germination and dormancy.
   3-  Seed is an unit of genetic recombination and replenishment.
   4-  Elementary movements.
   5-  Plant growth regulators-Auxins, Gibberellins, Cytokinins and Abscissic acid.
   6-  Physiology of flowering-photoperiodism and vernalization.


PAPER-III ECOLOGY AND BIOSTATISTICS                          M.M-34

2-  Plant and environment:Principals of environments, atmosphere, light, temperature, water,
      soil and biota.
3-  Morphological, anatomical and physiological responses of plants to water (hydrophytes
      and xerophytes): temperature (thermoperiodicity and vemalization): light (heliophytes
      and sciophytes).
4-  Population: Growth curve, ecotypes and ecads.
5-  Definition  of community, structure and attributes of community: frequency, density,
      cover, life-forms and biological spectrum, ecological succession.


UNIT-II

1-  Ecosystem concept, energy flow, food chain, food web and ecological pyramids.
2-  Biogeochemical cycles-brief discussion of concept by giving examples of carbon,
      nitrogen, phosphorus and Hydrological cycle.
3-  Brief idea of biogeographical regions and vegetation types of India: Forests and
      grasslands.
4-  Preliminary idea of environmental pollution-air, water, soil, noise and Radio active
      pollutions.


UNIT-III

1-  Introduction, definition, scope and importance of statistics.
2-  Sampling: aim,  simple random sampling, stratified random sampling, systematic
    sampling.
3-  Measures of central tendency, mean, median and mode.
4-  Classification, tabulation and graphic presentation of data.
5-  Measures of dispersion-range, standard deviation, standard error.
6-  Correlation : Correlation coefficient.
7-  Chi-square (X2 ) test.

Paper  I -  FUNGI, LICHENS, BACTERIA AND PLANT VIRUSES -  M.M-33


UNIT-I

1-  Introdction and salient features of Fungi, A brief  history of  the study of  Fungi and their place among the organism.

2-  Somatic structure of  Fungi.  Nutritional and Dnyiron metro needs of  fungi.

3-  Logical and ecological grouter of  fungi.

4-  Reproduction in Fungi –the fungal spore, asexual reproduction, sexual reproduction, heterothallism (two allelomorph heterothallism only), heterokaryosis and parasexual cycle (general idea only).

5-  Pathology of fungal plant diseases- A brief idea about disease symptoms, establishment of diseases, categories of plant diseases on the basis of their occurrence, control of plant dideases-brief idea about exclusion, eradication, protection by fungicides and by developing resistance.

6-  Importance of fungi both beneficial and harmful.

                                                
UNIT-II

1-  A broad classification of fungi upto the class level incorporating the latest ideas with respect ot classification pointing out the plave of the genera of fungi in the syllabus . 

2-  A study of the complete life history of the following genera.

LOWER FUNGI:
Stemonitis, Physarum, Synchytrium, Saprolegnia, Albugo, Pythium, Phytophthora and Rhizopus.

HIGHER FUNGI
Saccharomyces (Yeast), Eurotium (Aspergillus, Pencillium), Eryshiphe, Morchella, Ustilago, Puccinia, Agaricus, Alternaria, Colletotrichum and Cercospora.

                                               

UNIT-III
1-  Lichens: occurrence, symbiotic relationship, general structure, reproduction and economic importance.
2-  Bacteria : Structure, reproduction and economic importace.
3-  Plant viruses : nature, structure, transmission, multiplication and economic importance and baceriophages. 


Paper II - ALGAE AND BRYOPHYTA                                      M.M-33

1-  Introduction and salient features of Algae and their place among the organisms.
2-  Range of gegetative structure of Algae.  Cell structure of Prokaryotic and Eukarryotic Algae.
3-  Reproduction, types of life cycles (haplontic, diplontic, diplohaplontic, haplobiontic and diplobiontic)
     and  alternation of generations in algae.
4-  Ecology of algae-brief idea of fresh water and marine algae, terrestrial algae, phytoplanktons,
     epiphytic, parasitic and symbiotic algae.
5-  Economic importance of algae as food and fodder, in agriculture, industry and public health.
 UNIT-II 
 1-  Classification of algae (Smith) upto class level and basis of classification.
2-  Structure, reproduction and life cycles of the following genera.
3- Nostoc, Chlamydomonas, Volvox, Cladophora, Oedogonium, Chara, Vaucheria, Ectocarpus,
    Sargassum, Polysiphonia, Diatoms.


UNIT-III 

1-  Introduction and salient features of  Bryophytes.  Their place quereg the plant kingdom.
2-  Habitats, distribution and economic importance of  Bryophyta.
3-  Classification of Bryophytes.
4-  A brief account of alternation of generations.
UNIT-IV 
 Comparative study of Riccia, Marchantia, Pellia, Anthoceros and Funaria on the basis of  the
following features:
    1-  Morphology and anatomy of the gametophyte, vegative and sexual reproduction and
        structure of sporophyte.
    2-  Mechanism of spore dispersal and germination of spores (details of development are not
        required)


Paper III - PTERIDOPHYTA, GYMNOSPERMS AND ELEMENTARY
PALAEOBOTANY 


UNIT-I 


1-  Introduction and salient features of Pteridophytes and Gymnosperms.  Their  Plase awary the plant   kingdom.
2-  Habitats, distribution and economic importance of pteridophytes and gymnosperms.
3-  Classification of pteridophytes and gymnosperms upto order level, pointing out the features of  special  significance of each class.
4-  Alternation of generations   in pteridophytes and gymnosperms.


UNIT-II

Comparative study of Rhynia, Lycopodium, Selaginella, Equisetum, Pteris and Marsilea on the
basis of the following features:
1-  Morphology and anatomy of the vegetative plant body and spore producing organs
     (stobilus,  sporocarp, sporophyll, sporangium and spores), sexual reproduction.
2-  Telome theory, steler system,  apogamy, agamospory, apospory, heterospory and seed habit.


UNIT-III

Comparative study of Cycas, Pinus and Ephedra on the basis of the following features:
1-  Morphology  and anatomy of the vegetative body, sporophylls (their arrangement),
     sporangia, spores, male and female gametophyte, pollination, fertilization, embryology
     and germination.
2-  Types of wood thickenings, tracheids, medullary rays, pith and resin canals, mesarch and
      pseudomesarch, foliar bundles and stomata.


UNIT-IV

1-  Fossils, their types and process of fossilization.
2-  Gereral idea about various geological eras.
3-  Living fossils.
