 कुमाऊँ विश्वविद्यालय नैनीताल, एस0एस0जे0परिसर, अल्मोड़ा में विश्वविद्यालय की स्थापना के समय से ही स्नातक स्तर पर संस्कृत की कक्षाएँ चल रही थी। सन् 1980 से यहाँ स्नातकोत्तर स्तर पर साहित्य एवं दर्शन वर्ग चलाया गया किन्तु बाद में शिक्षकों की कमी को देखते हुए दर्शन वर्ग का पठन-पाठन बन्द करना पड़ा। तब से लेकर अद्यतन साहित्य वर्ग ही स्नातकोत्तर स्तर पर चलाया जा रहा है। वर्तमान में संस्कृत में स्नातक स्तर पर लगभग 300 तथा स्नातकोत्तर स्तर पर लगभग 60 विद्यार्थी संख्या है। विभाग में इस समय 02 प्रोफेसर तथा 02 एसोसिएट प्रोफेसर कार्य कर रहे हैं जिनके निर्देशन मे 15 शोधार्थी शोध कार्यरत् हैं। पिछले दो वर्षों से ‘‘प्री पी-एच.डी. कोर्स वर्क’’ चल रहा है तथा शोधार्थी प्रवेश परीक्षा के माध्यम से लिए जा रहे हैं। एम.ए. सैमेस्टर प्रणाली सुचारू रूप से संचालित है। संस्कृत पढ़ने वाले विद्यार्थियों की संख्या में निरन्तर वृद्धि हो रही है।

The libraries of both the campuses are well stocked to cater to the needs of the UG and PG students as well as the University Administrative Block, Nainital which also has a sizable collection of books on the subject. The Department also has audio-visual equipment as well as computer systems.
