Semester Wise Syllabus for B.Sc.Geology of Kumaun University from 2016 onwards

Syllabus of B.Sc. (GEOLOGY)

THREE-YEAR FULL-TIME PROGRAMME (Six-Semester Course)

Semester system course structure:

  1. The course work shall be divided into six semesters with three papers in each semester.
  2. Each paper in a semester will be of 80 marks out of which 60 marks for theory and 20 marks are allotted for internal assessment (written test or assignments or both)
  3. Each theory paper shall consists of Section A: 20% of total marks (12 marks; containing multiple choice, one word/one sentence answer, fill in the blanks, true- false questions), Section B: 40% of total marks (24 marks, there will be 6 question from which you will  have to attempt only 04 with short answer) and Section C: 40% of total marks; (24 marks, having 4 question from which you will have to attempt only 02 with long answer).
  4. Question paper shall cover the whole syllabus.
  5. Practical in each semester will be of total 60 marks, which includes marks for field training, sessional, attendance, practical records etc.
  6. Practical examination will be evaluated by both external and internal examiner.
  7. The duration of theory and practical examination shall be 03 hrs each.
  8. There shall be six semesters spread over three years with three papers in each semester at Undergraduate level. Each paper will be of three hours duration and there shall be one practical examination of three hours duration in each of them with session assessment in each practical and field training in odd semester practical. The session and field work will be assessed on the basis of class-work, practical record and field work performance.

Kumaun university logoThe Department of Geology of Kumaun University was started in 1975, and it became an active centre of post-graduate teaching and research in the field of structural geology, tectonics, petrology, sedimentology, quaternary geology, micropalaeontology, paleoclimate, mineralogy and geochemistry. The Department aims at studies for understanding and development of geology and natural environment, particularly of Himalaya and forelands.

THREE-YEAR FULL-TIME PROGRAMME


Paper I

Economic Geology                                                              Max marks 34


Unit-I:   Definition and scope of ore deposits, ore minerals and gangue minerals.

Unit-II: Occurrence, distribution and uses of metalliferous deposits in India i.e.- Copper, lead, zinc, iron, manganese, aluminium, chromium, nickel, gold, silver, molybdenum.

Unit-III: Indian   occurrence   and   uses   of   non-metals  i.e.-  mica,   asbestos,   barites,   gupsum, graphite, apatite and beryl.

Unit-IV: Indian occurrence of gemstones, refractory minerals, abrasives and minerals used in  glass,   fertilizer,   paint,   ceramic   and   cement   industries.   Building   stones,   phosphorite deposits. Placer deposits, rare earth minerals.

Unit-V:  Brief   idea   of   the   origin,   mode   of   occurrence   of   coal   and   hydrocarbons   and   their distribution in India.

Unit-VI: Mineral resources of Uttarakhand

Photogeology                                                                     Max marks 33


Unit  I:  Definition   and   scope   of   photogeology.   EM   radiation   and   EM   spectrum.   EM   energy interactions with atmosphere and earth surface features.

Unit II: Film and digital aerial photography. Types of aerial photographs. Annotations on aerial photographs.

Unit   III:  Scale   of   aerial   photographs.   Relief   distortions   and   vertical   exaggeration   in   aerial photographs. Orthophotographs.

Unit   IV: Aerial   photography   mission.   Tilt   in   aerial   photographs.   Stereoscopic   vision   in   aerial photographs. Stereoscopes and their types.

Unit V: Phototechnical and geotechnical elements of photo-interpretation. Aerial photo mosaics, their types and utility.

Unit   VI:  Application   potential   of   aerial   photographs   in   land   cover,   landform,   rock   type   and structure recognition,

Environmental Geology                                                         Max marks 33

Unit I:  Scope and aims of environmental geology. Biosphere and man.

Unit II: Natural hazards- Earthquakes, volcanism, floods, avalanches, landslides and slopefailures, Strategies and coping up with natural hazards.

Unit IV:  Elementary idea of soil types. Soil erosion and conservation.

Unit III:  Climatology and global environment- Coastal, reverine, dessertic , tropical, cold and polar. Green house effect and global warming

Unit V:  Preliminary idea of environmental implications of mining activities and their remedies.

Unit VI:   Elementary concept of watershed management. Land reclamation

THREE-YEAR FULL-TIME PROGRAMME


Paper I 

Petrology                                                                             Max marks 34


Unit I: Igneous   Petrology:  Composition   of   crust   in   terms   of   major   chemical   elements   and lithology;   Elementary      knowledge     of   magma     ,  it’s  composition     and   mode     of crystallization;   Bowen’s  reaction  series  and  its  significance;  Elementary  ideas  of  magmatic differentiation and assimilation; Crystallization of magma in binary system; Structure and texture of igneous rocks; Classification of basic igneous rocks; Petrology of granite, rhyolite, syenite,   basalt, dolerite,   gabbro   and dunite;   Basic concepts   of the origin of common igneous rocks, ultramafic and acidic rocks.

Unit II: Metamorphic Petrology: Metamorphism ,Agents and kinds of metamorphic zones and grades   of   metamorphism   ;   Concept  of   metamorphic   facies;   Structures and   textures  of metamorphic rocks.      Petrography and origin of important metamorphic rocks- phyllite, schists, gneisses, charnockite, marble, quartzite, hornfels and amphibolites.

Unit III: Sedimentary      Petrology:    Sedimentary      processes,   sedimentation     and   digenesis; Important     structures   in  sedimentary    rocks;   Textural    parameters;    Classification   of sedimentary      rocks;    Petrography     of   sandstones,    conglomerates,      mudstones     and carbonates. Environment of sedimentation; Facies concept.


Paper II

Paleontology                                                                       Max marks 33


Unit  I:  Introduction-  Modes   of   preservation,   Contributions   of   fossil   in   the   diverse   fields - palaeoecology,  biostratigraphy, biogeography,  taphonomy,  evolution   and    taxonomy. Fossil record of life.

Unit  II: Brief   morphology   and   geological   dsitriution   of   fossils   in  the   world  and   in  India Brachiopoda, Mollusca (Pelecypoda, Cephalopoda and Gastropoda); Trilobita, Echinoids, Authozoa and Graptolites.

Unit   III: Brief   description   about   different   microfossil   groups-  siliceous   (diatoms),   calcareous (Foraminifera), phosphatic and organic- walled.

Unit   IV: Brief   description   of   plant   fossils   and   various   genera   of  Upper   and   Gondwana  and Siwalik of Indian Subcontinent.

Unit V:
Origin and diversity of vertebrates. Evolution and Classification  of Horse, Man and Elephant.

Unit III:  Precambrian   formations   of   the   Indian   subcontinent;   their   distribution,   lithology   and subdivisions, fossil content, correlation and magmatic activities.

Unit IV:  Phanerozoic   formations   of   the   Indian   subcontinent;   their   distribution,   lithology  and subdivisions, fossil content, correlation and magmatic activities

Unit V: Brief account of  Geology of Uttarakhand.

Paper- I

Physical Geology                                                             Max marks 33


Unit I: Geology and its branches Earth in the Universe. Origin and age of the Earth. Interior and internal energy of the Earth.

Unit II: Endogenic and exogenic processes of the earth. Concept of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics. Mountain building and Isostacy.

Unit  III: Causes,    magnitude,    intensity  and  distribution   of  earthquakes.   Causes,    types  and distribution of volcanoes. Landslides and their types

Unit   IV:  The   rock   cycle.   Basic   characters   of   igneous,   sedimentary   and   metamorphic   rocks. Weathering and soil formation. Erosion and its types..

Unit    V:  Geological  works and associated landforms  of  wind, glacier,  river, oceans  and underground water.



Paper- II

Structural Geology                                                         Max marks 33


Unit I: Elements of Structural Geology- out crop, bedding, strike and dip of beds,  contours and
         their important patterns.

Unit II: Determination of Top and Bottom of beds.

Unit III: Folds and faults- their morphology and classification, effects of folds and faults on
         outcrops.

Unit IV: Joints and their classification.  Unconformity- types and significance.

Unit V: Rock cleavage, schistosity, foliations, and lineations; their types, and geological
         significance.



Paper- III

Crystallography and Mineralogy                                       Max marks 33


Crystallography:

Unit (I):  Definition   of   crystal,   Crystalline   and   amorphous,   Crystals   forms,   faces,   edges,   solid angles, interfacial angles and their measurement.

Unit (II): Crystallographic      axes   and  elements    of  symmetry.     Parameters,    Weiss    and   Miller system of notation.

Unit (III):  Morphological   study   of  common   forms   of   the   normal   class   of   cubic,   tetragonal, hexagonal, orthorhombic, monoclinic, and triclinic system

Unit (IV):Types of Twinning.


Mineralogy:

Unit (I): Physical properties of minerals concept of silicon oxygen tetrahedral and classification of silicates.

Unit (II): Study of minerals of silica, feldspar, mica, amphibolites, pyroxene, garnet, and olivine families.

Unit (III): Plane   polarized   light.  Isotropism    and   Anisotropism.    Nicol   prism   and   polarizing
          microscope.

Unit (IV): Behaviour of light in isotropic and anisotropic minerals (Uniaxial)

Unit (V): Basic knowledge of birefriengence, pleochroism and extinction.
